ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is the world’s leading association of more than 1000 metropolises, cities, urban regions and towns representing over 660 million people in 85 countries. ICLEI promotes local action for global sustainability and supports cities to become sustainable, resilient, resource-efficient, biodiverse, low-carbon; to build a smart infrastructure; and to develop an inclusive, green urban economy with the ultimate aim of achieving healthy and happy communities.

ICLEI and the WCCD have formed a new strategic partnership to develop and promote the use of standardized city performance indicators as a key platform for enabling cities to become more sustainable, resilient, prosperous and inclusive.

The partnership agreement was signed by Gino Van Begin, ICLEI Secretary General and Dr. Patricia McCarney, President and CEO of the WCCD during the ICLEI World Congress in Seoul in April 2015 in front of an audience of more than 1000 delegates from around the world.

Central to this exciting collaboration will be ISO 37120 Sustainable Development of Communities: Indicators for City Services and Quality of Life, the new international standard; created for cities, by cities. Both ICLEI and the WCCD were part of the working group within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that developed this new standard.

The first major activity of this partnership will be a pilot program for 10-20 ICLEI city members to implement ISO 37120 for the purposes of including each cities’ verified data in the WCCD Global Cities Registry, the global web-based platform for data verified under ISO 37120. This pilot program will also serve as an opportunity to capture key lessons from ISO 37120 implementation by the pilot cities, including identification of opportunities to enhance the complementarity of the WCCD Global Cities Registry and the carbonn Climate Registry, as well as feedback to guide the direction of future city standards development within ISO.
